Its well understood that a million or more people across the globe are victims to Anxiety Disorders, this disorder causes fear, distress and, at worst depression, despite being relatively treatable. Among the many probable ways that people find useful in managing and treating this condition is by the use of Anxiety medications.

These Anxiety medications are very vital and useful in treating the trite and most distressing of symptoms of anxiety disorders. One of their plus factor is in reducing the effects of panic attacks and assisting people to achieve a greater degree of control over the illiness. This in turn makes handling of issues that crop up during bouts of anxiety disorder quite easy to deal with. Anxiety medication for treatment of anxiety related disorders are therefore only available under physicians prescription and non the less.

Two Category of Anxiety Medication Widely used

Physicians who prescribe anxiety medications usually have a list of generic and brand names of these drugs, to facilitate quick dispensing. The purpose of using this drugs is chiefly to contain the symptoms of anxiety disorder while other therapy forms help the patient cope with the symptoms. An example is Psychotherapy, which is more often advised for anxiety disorders, other types of therapy include relaxation techniques and many more other forms. The general idea behind this, is to provide a patient of anxiety disorder with some level of relief and calm momentarily, while offering remedies that ensure long-termed ability to cope.

Two Major class of anxiety medications include:

Anxiolytics or anti-anxiety drugs. These ones work by reducing the pressures caused by anxiety itself. They are quite effective and fast acting, popular among these are brand names like Xanax and Valium, their biggest setback though, is that they are habit forming especially when used over long periods of time. They may also have negative impact on a persons ability to stay awake over extended periods, hence result to inability to carry out necessary functions. They are therefore prescribed only for short-term use.

Another one is Antidepressants, popular among these class of anxiety medication are brand names like Paxil, Lexapro and Prozac which are widely used in the treatment of the symptoms of anxiety disorders. They are often-times prescribed together with anti-anxiety medications. These anti-depressants are commonly used for extended periods of time and are not as fast acting as anxiolytics in releasing their effect. Additional to combating anxiety related symptoms, similar medications can also help with depression. Though, this is unfortunately, a common known negative effect of anxiety disorder.

Its never easy nor comfortable to leave a life laden with anxiety disorders. Where panic attack induced fears looms large and symptoms ride high in full gear. Due to the high habit-forming potential and other long-term side effects of these drugs, they may not be the only recommended form of treatment. Their use in conjunction with other coping mechanism can greatly help people have control of their lives once more.

Nearly everyone has experienced or will experience some kind of anxiety in their lives. It is completely normal to worry over your family when someone is sick, or that next bill when you are short on money. Final exams, that big entrance test, dream job interview tomorrow: all these things are a normal source of anxiety. But millions of people around the world experience this anxiety every single day – even when there is nothing going on to really worry about.

The latest figures released by the Anxiety Disorders Association of America say that there are an estimated 40 million people in America that suffer from some form of anxiety. With an estimated annual cost of $42 billion, anxiety accounts for almost one-third of the total annual mental health expenditures in this country. There are many specific illnesses that fall under the broad “anxiety disorder” category, such as panic disorders, generalized anxiety disorder, post traumatic stress syndrome, and many others. The exact treatments for these disorders varies widely depending on the disorder itself and the circumstances surrounding it.

What Causes Anxiety Disorders?

Even with millions of cases a year to examine, we still don’t understand what exactly causes anxiety disorders. While we have narrowed down the potential causes for generalized anxiety disorder (one of the most common anxiety disorders), scientists and physicians still don’t know the exact reason it manifests in some people but not others. The most commonly held belief among researchers is that it is caused by a combination of genetics, brain chemistry, and environmental issues, such as chronic work-related stress, or sudden extreme stress such as the death of a family member. Withdrawal from drugs can also trigger anxiety disorders. If the cause in a specific case can be isolated, treatment can be more focused and effective.

Dealing With Anxiety Disorders

Living with an anxiety disorder is not easy. The symptoms can get so bad that people completely isolate themselves in their home, only leaving when absolutely forced to do so. This is a defense response, an attempt to avoid anything that triggers an anxiety or panic attack.

Treatment usually consists of medication and therapy to work through the issues causing the anxiety order. Persistence is also required, as it can take years to be completely cured. Many people suffering from anxiety find that self-relaxation techniques, such as meditation or yoga, can be very helpful in dealing with the stress, and can be used to stop an impending panic or anxiety attack.

With 40 million people and rising suffering from anxiety every day, knowing the causes and what can be done to treat it is extremely important. But with patience and treatment, it is possible to cure this illness.

Students often feel a great deal of pressure to perform. They want to excel personally. They want to make their parents proud. They might even be trying to impress friends. Whatever the case, if the pressure is turned up a notch, test anxiety might result.

Test anxiety is generally considered a very normal occurrence. Almost anyone who has ever taken tests can recall at least one instance where fear of failure led to incredible cram sessions, incessant rewriting of notes and even a complete “blanking” out on knowing the answers. In most cases test anxiety is very normal and fairly easy to overcome. In some instances, however, test anxiety is the manifestation of an actual anxiety disorder.

“Normal” test anxiety can present with symptoms such as sweaty palms, an overall sense of malaise and a fear of not performing well. In most cases, students can overcome the problems by taking a few measures before a test. Some techniques for overcoming normal test anxiety include:

- Talking out fears with friends or family

- Pacing study rather than cramming

- Taking practice exams

- Deep breathing prior to an exam

- Self-affirmations prior to a test

- Obtaining extra tutoring before a big exam, if problems are present with the material. A little extra boost of help can go a long way toward alleviating fears.

Unfortunately, for some students test anxiety does go beyond the norm. If the symptoms are also accompanied by extreme fear, heart palpitations, physical pain, insomnia and other such signs, a more serious anxiety disorder could be present. This is especially the case if symptoms appear in other circumstances or they repeatedly present prior to tests. In many cases, the relaxation techniques for normal test anxiety will not have a major impact on a person who is suffering from full-blown anxiety disorder.

If an actual anxiety disorder is suspected, it is smart for a person to seek medical advice. There are treatments available to help people overcome the symptoms and lead lives free of abnormal anxiety and panic. Should the anxiety disorder go beyond just test anxiety, it is typically imperative for a person to seek help. Anxiety disorders can completely waylay lives if they are left unchecked.

Test anxiety is a fairly normal occurrence. Almost everyone experiences it at some point in life. If the problem is particularly severe, persists or its symptoms begin to show up in other performance-based or social situations, help is worth seeking out. There is no reason for a person with test anxiety or any other form of anxiety that is severe to go it alone.

If you think that living with anxiety is not really a very big deal, then you obviously know little about this extremely debilitating disease that plagues millions of people worldwide. Yes, anxiety is a disease of the human mind that can affect a persons day-to-day living in ways previously thought unimaginable.

Identifying Anxiety:

If you have a serious problem with an anxiety disorder, you may feel symptoms such as a rapid a rapid heart rate brought on by stressful thoughts. This fast heartbeat may cause you to feel dizzy, cold, or clammy. It may seven cause you to faint and lose consciousness. This is one extremely severe symptom of an anxiety disorder, and it is commonly known as a panic attack. If this happens to you, it is in your best interest to see a medical doctor as soon as possible.

Another symptom of an anxiety disorder is the in ability to feel comfortable around other people. This is known as Social Anxiety Disorder. Such a problem can cause a great deal of stress and panic for the person suffering from it. Dealing with friends, family, coworkers, and even strangers can become a seemingly impossible task. A person suffering from Social Anxiety Disorder may not feel comfortable enough around others to hold a normal conversation. He or she may panic when asked a question, or feel incredibly self-conscious when all eyes are on him or her. Eventually, someone with social anxiety disorder will try to hide from social gatherings at any cost. He or she will keep to himself or herself and come across to others as extremely introverted.

Anxiety has other ways of coming out and wreaking havoc on the human brain. Some people have an incredibly difficult time even getting out of the bed in the morning, all due to the fact that as soon as they open their eyes, all they can think about is the negative things the day might bring. This type of anxiety is typically aggravated and set off by an underlying problem in the persons life, such as a death of someone close, the dissolution of a romantic relationship or a marriage, or another devastating event. In these cases, the anxiety can become so overwhelming that the person will eventually lose the ability to properly function mentally.

Managing Anxiety:

Although anxiety can, in some cases, be almost impossible to live normally with, there are many steps that can be taken to control the disorder. A person suffering from anxiety can see a medical doctor known as a psychologist, who deals with treating anxiety. A psychologist can routinely monitor a patient with anxiety and suggest relaxation techniques. Sometimes simply having someone to talk to can better the situation. In certain cases of extreme anxiety, where the anxiety is too disruptive in the patients every day life, a patient can be prescribed anti-anxiety medication. This medication can help control anxiety and enable the patient to feel calm. Some popular anti-anxiety medications include Ativan, Lorazepam, Xanax, and Valium. Anyone dealing with anxiety should seek medical treatment as soon as possible. In this way, everyday life can become happy once again.

Anxiety is a complicated thing. Anxiety can easily make an otherwise very happy and healthy person become quite the opposite. Depression and physical sickness can quickly set in as a result of anxiety. Let’s take a much more detailed look at anxiety and its physical and mental signs and symptoms.

Physical symptoms of anxiety:

Have you ever looked at a person and just knew immediately that they were suffering from some sort of anxiety? Perhaps he or she looked haggard, stressed, unhappy, or mentally exhausted. If you didn’t already know it — physically, anxiety can make you very ill. Anxiety over events in your life can cause ever illness from Irritable Bowel Syndrome to heat problems to the common cold. You can become physically ill from anxiety because it actually lowers your immune system’s ability to fight off infections or bacteria. Anxiety strains the heart, and can cause rapid or irregular heartbeat. Severe, recurring and untreated anxiety can ultimately lead to heart attack and stroke.

If you look at a person with severe anxiety, you may be able to see the wrinkles in his or her forehead, the seemingly permanent grimace on the face, and black circles under the eyes. Severe anxiety can also cause him or her to be over or under their normal weight. This is because anxiety often does one of the two things: causes binge eating (which is when a person frequently overeats to deal with stress) or under eating (which is when stress completely wipes out a person’s appetite and they are unable to gain any appetite).

There are other physical symptoms of anxiety that can be found in the manifestation of other mental illnesses. For example, in people with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), severe anxiety can cause a flareup of highly obsessive behaviors. A person who is worried about something may obsessively repeat routines in order to alleviate the stress that they are under. Repetition is often a stress reducer for some with OCD. A chronically depressed person, on the other hand, may have a different reaction to anxiety. They may find it impossible to get out of bed in the morning, and therefore miss a great deal of time at work or school. You may notice that these people are physically absent from their usual activities.

Mental symptoms of anxiety:

Mental symptoms of anxiety are stressful to those who struggle with it. Those who suffer from extreme anxiety may find it nearly impossible to focus on anything except the thing that they are anxious or stressed over. It may seem that no matter what they try to focus on, their thoughts always come back to the same negative things. This can cause a highly depressed state in a person suffering from anxiety. It can also cause a person to have a mental breakdown and be unable to preform the day-to-day tasks that they usually do.

Mentally, anxiety can cause a person to become totally changed. Someone who once used to go out and be social with friends may now be a homebody, unwilling to talk much to others. Severe anxiety can cause mood swings, One minute a person an be content, and the next minute they can be completely unreasonable. Anxiety can cause a person to be unusually quite, distracted, and disorganized. The anxiety can be so overwhelming, that the person suffering from it may not want to explain it to others. In fact, it may seem almost impossible for the person suffering from it to even put it into words. Overall, anxiety is an extremely difficult thing for a person to deal with mentally and physically. If you are suffering from any of the above symptoms or have reason to believe that you are chronically stressed, it is in your best interest to seek the help of a mental health professional right away.

ANXIETY

The feeling of anxiety is common to all and we have all felt it many times in the course of our lives. But when anxiety becomes an excessive, irrational dread of everyday situations, it becomes a disorder.

Find out more on Anxiety Disorders and Panic Attacks

Nearly 40 million people above the age of 18 are affected by this disorder in a given year. Anxiety disorder may be caused by a mental condition, a physical condition, the effects of drugs, or from a combination of these.

Some of the common Types of Anxiety Disorders are:

I PANIC DISORDER

This condition is characterized by periods of intense fear or a psychological distress that lasts for about half an hour.

II GENERAL ANXIETY DISORDER (GAD)

This condition is characterized by excessive anxiety and worry, occurring more days than not for a period of at least 6 months, about a number of events or activities. Having this disorder means always anticipating disaster, often worrying excessively about health, money, family, or work. Sometimes, though, the source of the worry is hard to pinpoint.

III PHOBIC DISORDERS

These are persistent, unreasonable, intense fears (phobias) of situations, circumstances, or objects giving rise to anxiety and avoidance. Phobic disorders are classified as general (agoraphobia and social phobia) or specific.

A) Agoraphobia

Agoraphobia literally means “fear of the marketplace”. Therefore, people with agoraphobia are afraid of open or public places. In reality, most people with agoraphobia are actually afraid of having a panic attack in these settings, especially settings in which there will be no one to help in case of panic attack or an actual emergency.

B) Social Anxiety Disorder

The person suffering from this disorder has an excessive and unreasonable fear of social situations. The anxiety in this case arises out of the fear of being closely watched, judged or criticized by people around you.

C) Specific Phobias

A specific phobia is fear of and anxiety about a particular situation or object. Specific phobias are the most common anxiety disorders. Among the most frequent are fear of animals zoophobia), heights (Acrophobia) and thunderstorms (Astraphobia or Brontophobia).

i) Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

OCD is a type of disorder involving two elements: obsessions and compulsions. Obsessions are repetitive unwanted thoughts that make you feel anxious. Compulsions are repetitive behaviors and rituals that the patient feels compelled to perform as performing them temporarily reduces the anxiety.

ii) Separation Anxiety

This form of anxiety is a normal developmental stage experienced by a child when separated from the primary caregiver. It typically manifests itself as crying and distress when the child is away from a parent or from home.

ANXIETY MANAGEMENT & TREATMENT

At Home: In certain cases, it is possible to treat anxiety at home. However, these cases are limited to ones where the attack is of a short duration and where you know the reason for the attack. In such cases, stress can be relieved by practicing activities such as: Meditation, Watching TV, Deep breathing , Resting in a dark room etc.

Click here for information on Drug-free Treatment

Medical Treatment: When the nature of attacks is more serious in nature then the patient has to turn to medical treatment. Medical treatment depends on the cause of the anxiety.

There are cases when the cause cannot be identified. In such cases, the only way to treat is control of symptoms.

Medication does not cure anxiety disorders, but it helps to keep them under control while the person receives psychotherapy.

With proper treatment many people with anxiety disorders can lead normal, fulfilling lives.

Cathy M.

Anxiety is not something to be taken lightly – especially not for the millions of people around the world suffering from it. When sever enough, anxiety can completely disrupt life. It can make getting though a simple day seem like the most difficult thing in the world. If you have any type of anxiety disorder, you know this to be true. What can be done for anxiety?
